What is SSL / TLS

- SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

  : resides in Application Layer

: for encrypting HTTP traffic, such as connections between user devices and web servers

: Websites that use SSL encryption have https:// in their URLs instead of http://.

: SSL was replaced several years ago by TLS (Transport Layer Security), but the term "SSL" is still in common use for referring to the protocol

: SSL can also be used in VPNs

- TLS (Transport Layer Security)

  : resides in Application Layer

: the successor of the now-deprecated SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

: it's a cryptographic protocol designed to provide communications security over a computer network

: Several versions of the protocol are widely used in applications such as email, instant messaging, and VoIP, but its use as the Security layer in HTTPS remains the most publicly visible
