1. a bad apple

- a bad (or morally questionable) person within a group of good individuals, who might corrupt the entire group. Like a rotten apple in a barrel of good ones

- i.e.) Onlookers were worried that the entire group of trick-or-treaters was bad, but there were really only a couple of bad apples.

 

2. a baker's dozen

- thirteen, or one more than an actual dozen (which is twelve)

- i.e.) we went to the grocery store and bought a baker's dozen of chocolate chip muffins. we're looking forward to eating them later

 

3. a ballpark figure

- an approximate figure

- i.e.) this is only a ballpark figure. it may not be very accurate once you add up all the numbers

 

4. 9-to-5

- an average job schedule

- i.e.) he decided that he was going to look for a 9-to-5 job soon

 

5. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

- what you have at this moment carries more value than something you might obtain later

- i.e.) Jane asked me whether she should take the current job offer or wait for a better one. I told her to accept the current one. After all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
