1. beyond the pale (울타리를 벗어난)

- outside of the limits of socially or morally acceptable behavior

- i.e.) the way they acted was truly beyond the pale. it was simply unacceptable. don't you agree?

2. big cheese

- a very important person, especially the most important person in an organization

- i.e.) the boss is the big cheese in our company. she's the person who decides what gets done

3. big fish in a small pond (주위 환경보다 능력이 출중한 사람, 우물안 개구리)

- someone who seems more significant than they are because they live in a small or relatively insignificant community

- i.e.) Mr. Jones is always so arrogant at social events. He and his family are important in their little town. They're big fish in a small town.

 

4. big shot 

- a powerful person, often used in a sarcastic or resentful way

- i.e.) Marvin thinks he's a big shot. He thinks he's better than us and can tell us what to do.

 

5. big wheel (=big cheese)

- an influential, powerful, and important person

- i.e.) He's a big wheel in this organization. whatever he says goes.
