- it's a gentle way of discussing employees being fired or made redundant
- i.e.) we need to let Simon go, he has been very late almost every day this month
- i.e.) due to the budget cuts, half of the video team has been let go

- end of the working day
- i.e.) we're going to need the report by close of play Wednesday
